Tomorrow's Ruins

This short level takes the player through the entrance gate of an ancient alien civilization. The player must traverse through cavernous platforms and move weights in order to unlock the main gate and access the artifact found within. This level challenges the player’s platforming and problem-solving skills.

Design Goals:
For this level, I wanted to evoke a feeling of exploration within the environment. I wanted to challenge the player to learn how to use the basic movement system in tandem with things like jump pads and moving platforms. The player must also find alternative paths to move forward by using their knowledge of the movement system.
 

Challenges and Lessons Learned:
When beginning development on the level, I ran in to many different issues. The primary issue I ran in to was developing an enemy AI that I was satisfied with. Eventually in order to resolve this I decided to completely scrap combat and the enemies, choosing to lean more into the platforming and puzzle aspect of the level. Furthermore, one issue I ran in to had to do with room complexity. After scrapping the enemy AI, I had to completely revamp the left room. I also noticed during playtesting that shooting the weight cubes was difficult for many players. So I decided to implement a grab feature that allowed to player to pick up the weights and place them, manually. I also decided to add weights into each room that had to be taken along during the platforming.
